\f1\par \par TIPS for Getting Crystals working again....\par

\par \par This can help when a traditional FT-243 crystal has become \par "difficult" or fails to start oscillating any more. It will work with other \par non-plated crystal types too, like DC34, HC1, FT-171B etc. etc.\par

\par \par

\par

\par \par From N4JVP:\par

\par \par It never hurts to open up a balky/non-working FT-243. I like to put a\par drop of superglue on the nuts to hold them in place before\par disassembling the holder. Otherwise chasing those little nuts around\par can be a PIA.\par

\par \par Once everything is apart I rinse the holder, metal plates etc in\par isopropyl alcohol and let them air dry. The blank gets a little\par different treatment.\par

\par \par I hold the blank by its corners between my thumb & forefinger and put\par a drop of dishwashing detergent on it. After rubbing the soap all over\par the blank I hold it under running water to rinse it. I also switch\par hands holding the crystal to make certain all the soap residue gets\par washed away. After the water wash the blank is rinsed in isopropal\par alcohol as well. Then the blank is propped against the holder's pin\par tips to dry.\par

\par \par Sometimes I cheat and use a heat gun (lowest setting) to speed things\par along. Avoid pointing the gun directly at the blank, the air flow can\par send the lightweight quartz flying.\par

\par \par When reassembling the holder pay close attention to the metalplates\par that sandwich the black. One side of each plate will have lands\par (raised surface) on each corner, that side of the plate should be in\par contact with the crystal.\par
